Bon Cap Organic Wine Cellar
Introducing the Bon Cap Viognier and Cape Ruby Port.
Bon Cap Viognier 2005 The white Rhône variety Viognier has in the past three to four years taken off as one of the most exciting white cultivars around. It is currently ranked the fifth most planted white variety in South Africa with a total of 500 ha planted up to the end of 2004. These plantings are predominantly in the perceived “warmer”, continental influenced areas like Worcester and Robertson (as well as Malmesbury). It is therefore no surprise that the only organically farmed and commercially available organic Viognier stems from the picturesque Eilandia valley near Robertson, the home of Bon Cap Wines. Four hectares were planted here three years ago and the style from the 1.5t/ha (!) yielding vineyards has lead to a loyal, somewhat cult-like following, especially in the UK and Swedish markets. The limited production ensures attention to detail in the vineyard and winery. It is a very expressive, ripe but fresh and full-bodied, French oak-fermented style. Care is taken to ensure that the delicate Viognier fragrances (honey blossom, peach, spice and slightly musky) are well balanced with the use of new French oak. ‘It is great to see a few different styles emerging – wines that do not necessarily follow the same path as with Chardonnay. It shows the great diversity of this multidimensional variety,’ says winemaker Jacques Conradie. Bon Cap Cape Ruby 2003 This Port style dessert wine made from Touriga Naçional, one of the five traditional Port cultivars, tends to show slight uneven ripeness in the bunch that results in a wide spectrum of flavours - bright red berry fruit to ripe blackberry and raisins. This ensures a complex liqueur wine with density and structure, accompanied by coffee and chocolate flavours derived from ageing in old 300L French oak barrels for thirty months. The Breede River Valley and Klein Karoo have always been famous for quality dessert wines from its typical continental climate and well-drained, fertile soils. This very limited production (and first organic South African Port) was made with minimal intervention and bottled directly from the barrel by hand - unfiltered and unfined, as nature intended. As always we are very excited about the new additions to our growing range of quality wines.
