Balthazar Restaurant & Wine Bar
Exclusive wine bar and restaurant Belthazar, situated at the V&A Waterfront, has been selected as the Best Steakhouse in Greater Cape Town, and Best Newcomer to the Steakhouse Industry, at the SA Grainfed Beef Chateau Libertas Steakhouse Braai Restaurant of the Year Awards.
Belthazar’s Best Steakhouse award was one of only nine allocations made under the Regional category, and, coupled with the Newcomer award, two of only 24 awards in total. Now in the seventh year of its current format, the Steakhouse Restaurant of the Year Awards operates on a combination of assessment by food critics and public opinion. Initial nominations are made by consumers, on the basis of value for money and excellence of steaks and side dishes, as well as service and ambience. A short-list of approximately seventy restaurants is drawn for judging by a selection of food and wine critics, all of whom attend an independent meat tasting course convened by the Sensory Analyst and Human Nutrition Division of the Agricultural Research Council. According to the awards chairman, renowned food writer and critic Lannice Snyman, the judging this year was conducted in a more strict and focussed manner than ever before. Belthazar’s co-owner Ian Halfon is delighted with the win. “It’s marvellous to receive recognition within our first year of opening. That the judging included public opinion makes the achievement all the more valuable.” Only the finest ingredients are used at Belthazar. Specialising in seafood and meats, its Mozambican shellfish, South African line fish and aged grain-fed South African Karan beef are all export-quality. Belthazar is about excellence - from the wine and cuisine to exceptional service. The largest ‘wine by the glass’ wine bar in the world, Belthazar only uses renowned Riedel crystal glasses designed to enhance specific wine styles. Belthazar has also introduced revolutionary nitrogen technology developed in the USA to keep the wine in peak condition once opened. Belthazar is the creation of the owners of award-winning Balducci's, a benchmark for sophisticated dining at the Cape. Ian Halfon, Jonathan Steyn and Doron Duveen travelled the world to find an innovative formula that would showcase the Cape's wines at South Africa's premier tourist destination.
