June, a month of festivities

Celebrating Chenin Blanc

Diemersfontein kicks off the month with a nod to Chenin; celebrating International Drink Chenin Day on 8 June.

There are various accounts of Chenin Blanc's journey to the tip of Africa, several of which place the arrival in the latter half of the 17th century as one of the first varieties planted in the Cape by the Dutch East India Company. With an arduous sea journey behind them, and equally challenging conditions once ashore, one can begin to comprehend their urgency for some reprieve.

It seems there is no curbing the demand for Chenin. By the end of 2021, cultivation of the varietal comprised nearly 17 000 hectares. Not only does this bestow the title of ‘most widely grown cultivar in SA’, but the impressive planting also proudly surpasses all other wine countries, with more than 50% of the Chenin Blanc vines in the world found right here in South Africa.

Here at Diemersfontein, we boast two iterations of Chenin Blanc:

  • Diemersfontein Chenin Blanc 2023 presents aromas of fresh guava, white pear and passion fruit. These tropical nuances follow through to the palate, finishing with a well-balanced acidity and a lingering finish.
  • Diemersfontein The Clockmaker Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2022 is produced from vines planted next to the upper dam on the property in 1986 by David Sonnenberg's father. The block is established on a South-West facing slope consisting of mainly decomposed granite soils. These 36-year-old vines present the wine with aromas of honey, pineapple and yellow peaches with hints of spice on the palate is balanced with excellent oak integration and a delicate toasty note on the finish.

Whether you're a long time fan of Chenin, or looking to experience the diversity of this beautiful varietal, 8 June is the perfect day to pour yourself a glass of Chenin Blanc!

A new addition to our family of Pinotage sisters

We are excited to introduce you to our brand new wine Diemersfontein The Sweet Note Pinotage 2023.

Joining the family of Pinotage Sisters, The Sweet Note was created to showcase a different side of the cultivar that has become synonymous with Diemersfontein.

Already in the range is our ever popular The Original Pinotage, the first coffee-chocolate Pinotage in South Africa. The Carpe Diem Pinotage Reserve shows a richer side of the wine, with an emphasis on maturation potential, while The Prodigy Pinotage is a lighter "Pinot Noir-esque" interpretation.

The Sweet Note Pinotage is specifically crafted with 13.5% alcohol, and to showcase aromas of dark fruit, mulberry and black berry, with just enough sweetness on the palate. Delicate notes of roasted coffee bean on the nose, followed by flavours of plum, finishing with beautifully soft tannins.

You can purchase The Sweet Note Pinotage via our Diemersfontein Website E–Store, our Diemersfontein Smartphone App or our Diemersfontein Tasting Room for only R110 per bottle.

Meet the team behind the success of Diemersfontein

Meet Neagan Carolus, whose journey from a humble start as a pot washer to the esteemed role of Senior Supervisor at the Thokozani Guesthouse and Conference Facilities on Diemersfontein is nothing short of remarkable.

From day one, Neagan displayed an unwavering determination and eagerness to take on any task, always striving for excellence. Today, she steps into the shoes of our beloved late employee, Phillidah Daniels, with grace and ambition.

Overseeing a team of 8 hospitality cleaners and now a shareholder in Thokozani, Neagan embodies the spirit of resilience and dedication.

Last month, Neagan travelled to Kwa-Zulu Natal to represent the farm at the 3-day Africa Travel Indaba trade show.

"The experience was out of this world," she said upon her return to Cape Town.
"It was my first time flying and seeing what it looks like above the clouds! At the Indaba, I learnt a lot and got some great tips on running our Guesthouse more productively."

Neagan's journey is a testament to the power of hope and hard work, and we couldn't be prouder to have her as an ambassador of hospitality.

We wish her continued success and growth as she shines bright in her new role.

Flying the flag at Africa's Travel Indaba

What an incredible week at the African Travel Indaba with the SA Department of Tourism!

We are thrilled to announce that Thokozani was a massive success and received with great enthusiasm.

Denise Stubbs (MD of Thokozani) and Neagan Carolus (Senior Supervisor) had the privilege of meeting the National Minister of Tourism, Me Patricia De Lille, and the Kwa-Zulu Natal Premier, discussing our shared vision for tourism and growth.

The highlight of the event? Thokozani being selected by SABC a national TV channel to showcase our story of transformation, our exquisite wines, and the unique accommodation at Diemersfontein Wine Estate. Our team was over the moon to share our journey and passion on national TV.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Here's to many more milestones ahead!
