KWV’s enduring association with the celebrated South African grape variety of Pinotage has again been recognised with the Abraham Perold Tributum 2011 returning as a winner in the latest Perold Absa Cape Blend Competition. The results were announced at a presentation function at the five-star Marine Hotel in Hermanus on Friday.
One of only five top achievers chosen this year, the icon wine from the KWV stable that was named after the founder of Pinotage, comprises 40% Shiraz, 30% Pinotage, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Its achievement follows that of the Abraham Perold Tributum 2010 - a winner in last year’s ABSA Cape Blend Competition.

Annually, the Perold Absa Cape Blend panel of judges identifies the best expressions of wines that have Pinotage as a significant component. Since its launch in 2011, the competition has seen many producers who are widely recognised as the country’s finest, among the competitors.

“The achievement of the Abraham Perold Tributum 2011 is a very satisfying confirmation of the stylistic direction and strategy we’ve embarked on with our Pinotage wines,” says KWV chief winemaker Johann Fourie.

The accolade affirms the adept and consistent handling by KWV of Pinotage, which is distinctively South African. KWV has been a regular winner in the most recent ABSA Top 10 Pinotage Competitions, with five KWV wines having featured in the Top 20, in the past five years.

“The Tributum, which sells for approximately R500 and is designed to promote the very best South Africa has to offer, rates very highly against the top wines of the world,” says Fourie.

A wine of elegance and balance, the Abraham Perold Tributum 2011 carries layered aromas of fruitcake, anise and cranberry; a lifted perfume of floral and marzipan; and, a touch of cigar box and pencil shavings.

“Whilst we are delighted for this wonderfully stylistic and concentrated wine to have again featured in the Perold ABSA Cape Blend Competition, a wine such as our Classic Pinotage that sells for a fraction of the price also shows the skillful winemaking demonstrated with the Abraham Perold Tributum.”

The KWV Classic Pinotage is priced at around R64.95. They are both available at Makro, Ultra Liquors and most fine wine stores.
