Spier
Spier’s winery has won multiple awards in recent years, including Producer of the Year (Mundus Vini, Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2011). Spier also performed exceptionally well at the 2011 International Wine and Spirits Competition (five Best in Class Gold medals and two trophies), and was the top performing winery at Veritas (2009 and 2010).
Cellar Master Frans Smit is the man behind the wines’ success. A member of the esteemed Cape Winemakers Guild, Frans is recognised as one of the top winemakers in the country. Frans believes that the quality of the wine starts in the vineyard. He grew up on a table-grape farm, and this instilled a deep appreciation of the value of good fruit. He studied viticulture as well as winemaking, and also employs a full-time viticulturist, Johann Smit, as part of the winemaking team at Spier. Together they ensure that the vineyards are meticulously managed to produce quality fruit that is picked at optimum ripeness for Spier’s wines. Spier’s cellar has ISO 22000 certification, is Fair Trade accredited, organically certified and follows the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) criteria. The wines are created within three primary ranges: Spier Signature, Spier Creative Block and 21 Gables, plus the flagship wine Frans K. Smit.

Here is a little bit more on the 21 Gables Pinotage:

21 Gables
Spier’s 21 Gables range celebrates the history of winemaking in South Africa, as well as the farm’s unique architectural feature; an unrivaled 21 Cape Dutch gables.
The Pinotage is produced from a vineyard in unusually close proximity to the ocean.  The cool False Bay breezes and this rare terroir results in a Pinotage that is distinctive in style.
