It is a generally accepted fact that there is no bigger inter-school clash in the world than that when Gymnasium High takes on Paarl Boys High and Paarl Girls High. The Interschool Grape Stomp during the harvesting season is becoming an annual event for the schools to get together for some fun and games before the big showdown on the sports fields in August. “The 2013 harvest looks very promising with regard to both quality and volumes. It’s a privilege to be able to well and truly celebrate the harvest in this Boland town with a grape stomping competition and combine it with the age-old great school traditions we share,” said Danie Marais, cellarmaster at Windmeul. Each team comprises 12 members, of two boys, two girls, male and female teachers, old boys and girls, who will have to show their leg lifting skills as they challenge each other in vats filled with 2013 wine grapes. This barefoot competition will be judged by a panel, which will include a member from each school. A top of the range scale, sponsored by Massamatic, will be carefully calibrated to weigh both the pre-stomping grapes, as well as the juice thereafter. Each team will have two minutes to stomp and any contravention will be penalised. Paarl Boys and Paarl Girls high schools last year won a tightly contested competition by a mere 7 grams. This year the winning team is awarded with a prize gift voucher of R5 000 so that they can purchase Windmeul wine to that value for functions during the course of the year. So, to see the grapes splatter and burst on Saturday 2 March, the finalised teams must be sent to Windmeul’s cellarmaster, Danie Marais at tel. 021 869 8100, or e-mail danie@windmeul.co.za by Tuesday 26 February.
