Van der Merwe Festival 352

Monday, 18 February, 2013
How many of us can say that we have a popular surname? How many of us can say that we have a popular surname and that there is a festival held to commemorate it and our heritage?
If you hold the surname Van de Merwe, like our previous news editor did, then this event is most definitely for you!

From 1 - 3 March 2013 people from across South Africa will gather to honour their family name and ancestors at the Van der Merwe Festival 352 (It is 352 years since the first van der Merwe landed in the Cape).

With Van der Merwe Festival – 352 we want to delve into our past and be reminded of our ancestors and give thanks to those who carved the way to where we as descendants stand today.

At Van der Merwe Festival – 352 everyone is welcome – when gathered together aren’t we all van der Merwes?

With food stalls, exhibitions, tours to the original family farm, a kid’s area, historical talks, a Sarel van der Merwe book signing, music performances by, among others Wicus der Merwe and a Miss Van der Merwe competition, it is a festival for the whole family.

The festival promises to create many fond memories which will inspire future generations.

It's the Van Der Merwe Festival 352 from 1 to 3 March 2013 at Backsberg Wine Estate. We are here to stay!

Tickets are available from Computicket and will also be sold at the gate. See our website: or for further information contact Nicolene on 079 642 2892 or email:
