On December 10, 1997 Mamreweg Co-operative was transferred to a private company by the name of darling Cellars.
As indicated the name reflects the name of the nearby town of Darling that is located 70km north of Cape Town on the West Coast of South Africa.
The area in which the cellar is situated is known as the Groene Kloof and has recently been discovered as the gem of the South African wine industry. Because of the cold breezes during the hot summer months the quality of the grapes that are produced in this dry land area calls for the making of top quality wines. Recently one of South Africa’s well know wine makers, Albe Beukes, was appointed to ensure that the wine from this area will become some of the best wine of origin. The cellar was also upgraded recently abd currently has some of the most modern equipment for the making of wine. French Oak is also used in the wine making process and contributes to some superb wines. The area is also referred to as the Napa Valley of South Africa and will in the future be one of the most sought after wine producing areas in South Africa.
