Johannesburg's fifth RMB WineX, held from 26 to 29 October at the Sandton Convention Centre, attracted just over 12000 visitors, up by 25% on last year's attendance partly as a result of the addition of an extra night.

Consumer tasting ability showed up tops when over 3 000 guests made their Best-Wine-on-Show selections. The Best-Wine-on-Show awards, sponsored by Talk Radio 702, are the only South African wine accolades where the public votes for its favourite wines.

Michael Fridjhon, organiser of WineX and the Best-Wine-on-Show awards, was very satisfied with the attendance at this year's WineX : "More important than the increased turnout was the high number of discerning guests who used WineX as a wine tasting and learning experience. This was underlined by the selection of top-quality wines they voted for in finally arriving at the Best-Wine-on-Show awards."

Talk Radio 702's Best White Wine on Show was the Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2004, a John Platter Wine Guide 2005 Five-Star laureate and also winner at WineX Cape Town 2004. The 2003 vintage of this wine won the award at WineX Cape Town last year.

The Meerlust Rubicon 2000 was voted the Best Red Wine on Show.

BA Comair and Makro, partners of RMB WineX, provided very generous prizes for the lucky draw public prizewinners at the show. BA gave away four double return tickets on their regional routes as nightly first prizes and Makro gave away four 12-bottle cases of their Vineyard Value Selection as second prizes.
