Local winemaker Niels Verburg and his five year-old son, Kim were shot while camping near their vineyard, Luddite in Botriver on the weekend.

Both Niels and Kim are being treated for bullet wounds in Hermanus. Kim is in the Intensive Care Unit and will have to undergo major reconstructive surgery to his esophagus.

Niels, formerly at Beaumont, took his son camping near their Luddite vineyard in Botriver on Friday night. They were shot at approximately 02:00am Saturday morning by an armed bandit while they were sleeping at the entrance to a cave.

Clive Torr and Tanja Beutler have created a benevolent fund to assist with Kim Verburg's medical expenses. Auctions in aid thereof are planned both in Somerset West and Johannesburg. Dates will be announced shortly.
