Paarl Web received a gold medal at the recent Sappi African Printer of the Year Awards for Winescape Magazine.

The Sappi African Printer of the Year competition acknowledges printing excellence from the African continent and is celebrating its 25th  anniversary in 2004.

Winescape Magazine was honoured for printing excellence at the awards function in Johannesburg on 23 July 2004 in the category ' Web Magazines' .

Sappi Fine Paper South Africa Managing Director, Albert Lubbe, says the Sappi African Printer of the Year competition is a celebration of achievement and reinforces the central role that print has in the communications mix.

'It is a gathering in honour of people who have taken a concept and perfected it. Taken a craft and added the passion that transforms a product into a work of art.'

At the function Lubbe said that no medium complements all other communications media more effectively than print. 'No other medium has the power to engage on so many levels simultaneously,' he said.

'Web' magazines, according to Dave Stone from Paarl Web, are printed using a reel-fed as opposed to a sheet-fed process and is the preferred method of printing high quality publications at high speed and volumes.

Dave comments on behalf of Paarl Web: 'Though the Sappi award specifically recognizes excellence in printing, design, layout and reproduction all contribute toward the overall quality of a publication such as Winescape'.

Paarl Web and Winescape will now compete in the Sappi International Printer of the Year competition to be hosted in Cape Town in October this year.

Winescape Magazine was launched in March this year at Cape Wine 2004 with a vision to stimulate wine tourism to South Africa and promote the Cape's winelands to an international audience. The publication is jointly owned by Kevin Kidson, Judy Brower and Lesley Beake. Regular contributors include the esteemed critics, Jos Baker and Neil Pendock.

Distribution is mainly through the international offices of Wines of South Africa and the wine trade in these countries with a major focus on the United Kingdom and Europe.

Winescape is designed by Cecily Rocher and Tania Morgan from Cecily Rocher Design.

The publishers and editorial team would like to congratulate Paarl Web and thank the wine industry for its continued support.

Issued on behalf of Winescape.
