A scorpion and a bull are not only the symbols found in various of the galaxy’s star constellations. They are also the images used to inspire the revamped wine labels of Stellekaya, the boutique family-owned winery in the heart of Stellenbosch.

‘Stellekaya is a combination of the Italian for ‘stars’ and Xhosa for ‘home’ that depicts us as ‘the home of the stars’, says Dave Lello, owner of Stellekaya and somebody who – apart from being a wine lover – has had a lifelong fascination with planets, stars and astronomy.

‘For our new wines from 2002 vintage, we have decided to revamp our previous generic label to align each new Stellekaya wine with a different star, as well as incorporating our slogan of ‘home of the stars’.’ The eye-catching labels, which were inspired by Lello and designed by graphic artist Annie Selibowitz, are used on the 2002 vintages of the Stellekaya Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Stellekaya Merlot 2002 depicts a beefy bull surrounded by a starry constellation. The label pays tribute to the constellation Taurus in which the Giant Red star Aldebaran is known as the Eye of the Bull. A stylish scorpion is found on the Stellekaya Cabernet Sauvignon 2002. The theme is the constellation Scorpius, whose Giant Red is named Antarestorms – Heart of the Scorpion.

‘The new-look labels present a combination between the finest modern graphic design and ancient symbols that have been interpreted through various images over the centuries,’ says Lello. ‘Each wine is now given its own individual identity, but the theme of heavenly bodies and the design style harnesses the Stellekaya look and feel.

‘Like each of these stars and constellations inspiring our products, every Stellekaya wine expresses its own identity and qualities which we perceive to be starlike!’
