Young talent scooped this year’s coveted Fleur du Cap Best Actor and Best Actress awards at the FLEUR DU CAP THEATRE AWARDS for productions staged during 2003. Mncedisi Shabangu, renowned for his unique style of physical theatre, won the Best Actor award for his role as the narrator and sculptor in Tshepang. The Best Actress award went to Quanita Adams for her roles in At her feet and Valley Song. Director Heinrich Reisenhofer clinched the Best Director award for Cry the Beloved Country. The Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards were announced during a luncheon held at the Radisson Hotel in Cape Town on March 5th, 2004. The awards under the auspices of the Distell Foundation for the Performing Arts have given recognition to local professional theatre for the past 26 years. David Dennis received the Best Supporting Actor award and Sonia Esgueira picked up the Best Supporting Actress award – both portraying various characters in Two Gentlemen of Verona. Marc Lottering won the award for Best Performance in a Revue or Cabaret for his role in Marc Lottering Live and Say Cheese. The award for the Most Promising Student went to Daniel Judes of UCT and the award for the Best Technical Contribution to Theatre went to Malcolm Hurrell for lighting design in Two Gentlemen of Verona. Lara Foot Newton received the Best New Indigenous Script award for Tshepang and Nadia Davids was given the Rosalie van der Gucht Prize for New Directors for At her feet. The Special Merit Lifetime Achievement award was presented to Dr Hennie Aucamp in recognition of his contribution to theatre in South Africa. The judges for productions staged in 2003, under the chairmanship of Conrad Sidego, were Danie Botha, Gabriël Botma, Herman van der Westhuizen, Dr Beverley Brommert, Len Ashton, Derek Wilson, Wilhelm Snyman, Marianne Thamm, Laura Twiggs, Rafiek Mammon and Peter Voges.
