Nominations Announced

The production of Mamma Medea has scooped up the most number of nominations at the FLEUR DU CAP THEATRE AWARDS for productions staged during 2003. This drama production clinched five nominations for best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best director and best technical contribution to theatre.

The Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards under the auspices of the Distell Foundation for the Performing Arts have supported arts in the Western Cape for the past 26 years by giving recognition to local professional theatre.

The awards will be presented at a luncheon at the Radisson Hotel in Cape Town on Friday, 5 March 2004 when silver and bronze medallions and cash prizes of R6000 will be awarded to the winners.

Four actors have been nominated for the Best Actor Award: (in alphabetical order) Ivan Abrahams for his role as Buks in Valley Song; Joko Scott in the role of Reverend Stephen in Cry the beloved Country; Sello Sebotsane for various roles in Happy Natives, and Mncedisi Shabangu for his role as the narrator and sculptor in Tshepang.

The four nominations in the category Best Actress are: Quanita Adams for various roles in At her Feet as well as Valley Song; Nazli George for her performance in Rootz; Kholeka Qwabe for playing Tshepang's mother in Tshepang, and Anthea Thompson in the title role of Mamma Medea.

The four nominees in the category Best Supporting Actor are: David Dennis for playing various characters in Two Gentlemen of Verona; Chris Gxalaba as Matthew in Cry the beloved Country; Dumisani-Siswe Mbebe for his role as Byron in Rustlers, and Neels van Jaarsveld for his role in Mamma Medea.

Mary Daniels as Verity in Glass Roots; Sonia Esgueira for playing various characters in Two Gentlemen of Verona; Shannon Ezra as Anita in Japes, and Antoinette Kellermann for her roles in Mamma Medea have been nominated in the category Best Supporting Actress.

The nominations for Best Director are: Marthinus Basson for Mamma Medea and Two Gentlemen of Verona; Greig Coetzee for Green Mamba; Lara Foot Newton for Tshepang and Heinrich Reisenhofer for Cry the beloved Country.

Five young student actors have been nominated for Most Promising Student. These fine students from UCT are: Clyde Berning, Jill Levenberg, Daniel Judes, Brennan Holder and Mandi Manson.

In the category Best Performance in a Musical or Revue there were three nominations: Alan Committie for Dracula, Paul du Toit as the male vocalist in Off-Beat Broadway 3 and Marc Lottering for his performance in Marc Lottering Live and Say Cheese.

In the category Best Technical Contribution to theatre there were four nominations: Marthinus Basson for the design in Mamma Medea; Peter Cazalet for the set design in Cry the beloved Country; Malcolm Hurrell for the lighting design in Two Gentlemen of Verona and Sarah Roberts for set and costume design in Madiba Magic.
