A coalition of wine buyers, with combined sales of around 400 mil bottles a year, has pledged to build demand for regeneratively farmed wine, aiming to give growers the confidence to change how they farm.

The Regenerative Accelerator Group, convened by the Regenerative Viticulture Foundation (RVF), was launched at the Sustainability in Drinks conference at Christ Church Spitalfields in London on Tuesday (20 October).

Its founding signatories are Berry Bros. & Rudd, Erewhon, Haggen, Levy UK & Ireland, Systembolaget, The Wine Society, Total Wine & More and Waitrose. Speaking at the launch, RVF development director Anne Jones said that between them the eight businesses sell around 400 million bottles a year.

Each signatory has committed to build demand for wines from regeneratively farmed vineyards, agree a target with the RVF that fits its business, share data and report annually on progress, and contribute expertise and resources to the programme. Together they will support the RVF’s goal of having 10% of the world’s vineyards farmed regeneratively by 2035.

Speaking at the launch event, RVF patron Jancis Robinson MW said she was “thrilled about this new initiative designed to close the loop between good viticultural intentions and consumer awareness and action”.
