The Programme, endorsed by industry organizations and funded by South Africa Wine NPC, is free of charge to all permanently employed cellar assistants in the wine industry, irrespective of their previous training or work experience.
The Programme has become a cornerstone of cellar assistants’ development in the wine industry, as it extends beyond the transfer of technical knowledge. Winemakers consistently stress that cellar assistants should not only understand how to perform their tasks, but why each step in the production process is important. This deeper understanding enables cellar assistants to see how their daily actions directly affect cellar operations and overall financial performance.
Participants also gain insight into global industry trends while developing a broader understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the South African wine industry. Therefore, winemakers regard the Programme as a valuable investment, equipping cellar assistants with a sound understanding of their responsibilities, the importance of quality and the consequences of errors.
Participation in the Cellar Assistants’ Programme is generally recognized for its positive impact, and feedback from both winemakers and cellar assistants confirms the relevance and value of the workshops. Cellar assistants are familiar with the wines produced by their own cellars but have limited opportunities to taste wines from other cellars and winegrowing regions. This restricts the development of their practical knowledge and broader understanding of the South African wine industry. Cellar assistants attending the 2026 workshops had the opportunity to taste a diverse range of white and red blended wines from different regions, broadening their understanding of wine styles, as well as strengthening their technical knowledge and expanding their tasting vocabulary.
Further, feedback from winemakers confirmed that the Programme contributes to the personal and professional growth of participating cellar assistants. Winemakers have observed increased confidence, initiative, and a greater willingness among participants to accept responsibility. The Programme demonstrates that advanced knowledge plays a significant role in strengthening participants' confidence. As a result, cellar assistants are more likely to report errors, take ownership of their responsibilities, and proactively reduce mistakes in the cellars. Therefore, providing relevant winemaking knowledge fosters confidence and accountability, qualities that lead to greater accuracy, improved problem reporting and productivity, and more consistent performance under pressure.
Encouragingly, winemakers reported that participation in the Programme also improves communication and strengthens relationships in the cellar. By fostering a culture of knowledge sharing, cellar assistants build trust, strengthen relationships, and contribute to more effective teamwork.
As participants apply their knowledge in the cellar, future leaders and role models continue to emerge, strengthening the resilience and motivation of fellow cellar assistants. During 2026, the Programme provided clear evidence that it empowers individuals and cultivates leadership potential when two senior cellar assistants successfully presented tastings in Breedekloof and Robertson.
