When the Clüver family planted vineyards in Elgin more than three decades ago, they did so with a conviction that bordered on audacity. At a time when the cool mountain valley was still regarded more as apple country than fine wine territory, Riesling was among the very first cultivars they chose to put into the ground. It was a decision that has proved visionary.
Today, as the 2026 vintage of Paul Clüver Estate Riesling is released, the wine remains one of South Africa's most eloquent expressions of this noble variety. More importantly, it continues to tell the story of a place whose cool climate and ancient soils have become synonymous with purity, finesse and authenticity.
“Paul Clüver Family Wines was the pioneering wine producer in Elgin, helping establish the region as one of the country's foremost cool-climate wine destinations,” says cellarmaster Andries Burger. “Riesling has been central to that journey from the beginning. It is a variety that thrives in restraint rather than excess, demanding moderate temperatures and long, gentle ripening periods. Few South African regions offer these conditions as consistently as Elgin.”
The 2026 growing season once again illustrated both the rewards and challenges of farming in this unique valley. A favourable growing season delivered healthy canopies, excellent fruit set and generous crop levels before heavy February rains complicated the harvest. Careful vineyard management and meticulous selection in the cellar ensured only pristine fruit found its way into the final blend.
For Burger, Riesling is never about intervention. It is about preserving the character nature has already written into the grapes. Fruit from the estate's mature 17-year and 39-year-old vineyards is vinified separately before being blended to create a wine balancing vibrant acidity with the variety's hallmark natural fruit sweetness. “A portion of the wine is deliberately arrested during fermentation to retain natural residual sugar, while the remainder ferments dry before resting on its fine lees to build texture and complexity,” he says.
The result is unmistakably Paul Clüver and unmistakably Elgin.
Delicate aromas of citrus blossom, fresh lime and orchard fruit lead to a palate alive with crystalline freshness. The hallmark interplay between piercing acidity and gentle off-dry fruit creates a wine of remarkable energy, while the mineral thread drawn from the estate's shale-rich soils provides depth and a lingering, mouthwatering finish. It possesses that captivating Riesling quality the Germans describe as Spannung – a vibrant tension that keeps every sip alluring and evocative.
