If you know Johan Grimbeek, you are likely familiar with three fundamental things about him: he always has wine stains on his hands, a loyal dog at his feet, and he is a fiercely proud Springbok supporter. Today, the local wine industry is rallying behind this quiet, humble, and brilliant winemaker in his greatest time of need.
Johan, the much-loved winemaker at Kanu Wines in Stellenbosch, is currently fighting brain cancer. The tumour has unfortunately spread, and despite the relentless efforts of Johan and his wife, Michelle, to secure the best possible medical interventions, the ongoing healthcare costs have become an overwhelming financial burden for the family.
A man who is more at home outdoors than anywhere else – often found with a fishing rod in hand along the shores of Struisbaai – Johan has dedicated his life to the art of winemaking and the elevation of South African wine. His journey in the industry began in 1998 at Chamonix Estate in Franschhoek. Over the years, he honed his craft at Mulderbosch Vineyards in Stellenbosch and spent formative time learning in France.
His unwavering dedication culminated in a pinnacle achievement in 2020, when his Chenin Blanc Reserve was crowned the Best in the World at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC).
Yet, well beyond his international accolades, Johan is cherished for his character. He is the man who has entertained countless wine lovers with his engaging tastings and generously shared his knowledge, teaching so many of us to appreciate the finer nuances of a good vintage.
Now, we are asking the wine industry and the broader public to stand with Johan, his wife Michelle, and their son, Janu. We have a shared opportunity to give back to a man who has poured his heart into every harvest, ensuring he receives the care he rightfully deserves.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to assist the family during this incredibly difficult period. All proceeds from the campaign will go directly to Michelle to be used on Johan's behalf, covering mounting hospital bills and daily care expenses.
