Groot Phesantekraal
In August, Groot Phesantekraal celebrates two things close to their hearts: Women and Syrah.

August is Women's Month, and we're shining a spotlight on none other than Anna de Koning, the original matriarch of our 328-year-old Durbanville farm. It's also the month of South Africa's National Shiraz Day on 21 August, giving us the perfect excuse to celebrate one of our signature wines with a theatrical new cocktail and exclusive cellar door specials. And because our midweek lunch special has been so popular, we're keeping it on the menu a little longer. We hope you'll join us at Groot Phesantekraal.

Our original matriarch

This Women's Month, we're honouring the extraordinary story of Anna de Koning, a 17th-century woman whose remarkable journey reflects the resilience, ambition and complexity of South Africa's early history.

Born to a slave, Anna rose to become one of the Cape's most prominent women, gaining wealth, influence and respect in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Following the death of her husband, Olof Bergh, in 1724, she inherited Groot Phesantekraal (dating back to 1698), along with several other significant properties, making her one of the wealthiest women of her time.

Today, we celebrate Anna's enduring legacy through our limited-edition Anna de Koning Chenin Blanc, a wine that reflects both the farm's deep roots and her remarkable spirit. Partially amphora- and barrel-fermented, this elegant cool-climate Chenin Blanc is a tribute to a woman whose story continues to inspire generations.

Our drink of choice this August: The Syrah Sour

Available at our restaurant throughout August, we're celebrating the third instalment in our exciting wine cocktail series, created by mixologist Julian Short (aka The Flavourist). Bold, layered, and unapologetically expressive, the Syrah Sour is a tribute to Groot Phesantekraal's flagship red wine and the passion behind its creation, while celebrating winemaker Richard Schroeder.

Built around the farm's acclaimed Syrah, the cocktail combines whisky, honey water and fresh lemon juice before being finished with a dramatic float of Syrah, creating a drink that's rich in flavour, colour and theatricality (rather like our winemaker...).

Groot Phesantekraal Syrah 2024 awarded at the Shiraz SA Challenge

We are incredibly proud to share that our Groot Phesantekraal Syrah 2024 has been named one of the Top 12 winners at the Shiraz SA Challenge 2026!

A huge congratulations to our winemaker, Richard Schroeder, and the entire cellar team on this remarkable achievement. Their dedication, passion and commitment to excellence continue to shine through in every bottle.

Here's to raising a glass to another milestone for Groot Phesantekraal.

Get your hands on our award-winning Syrah and Syrah Rosé at special prices

We're rewarding you with outstanding value this August. Until month-end (while stocks last), enjoy these exclusive case offers:

  • Groot Phesantekraal Syrah 2023: R1 000 per case (regular price: R1 134)
  • Groot Phesantekraal Syrah Rosé 2025: R650 per case (regular price: R720)

Groot Phesantekraal Syrah 2023 is a cool-climate Shiraz with real complexity. Ripe plum and blackberry lead the nose, lifted by elegant spice and white pepper. The palate is soft, with tannins well integrated into the fruit and oak, and it will drink well now or over the next five years.

Groot Phesantekraal Syrah Rosé 2025 is made in an elegant Provençal style with a light, vibrant salmon hue. Bright red berry aromas, mostly ripe strawberry, give way to an elegant palate with a smooth minerality that keeps it refined rather than sweet.
