Survivor Wines has added another prestigious accolade to its growing list of achievements, with the Survivor Reserve Chenin Blanc 2023 receiving a Gold Medal (95 points) at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA). Recognised as one of the world's most respected and influential wine competitions, the DWWA attracts entries from leading wine-producing regions across the globe, making this award a significant endorsement of the quality, character and craftsmanship behind this exceptional Swartland Chenin Blanc. This also marks the second consecutive year that a Survivor wine has been awarded Gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards, reinforcing the brand's commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality.
Regarded as one of the world's largest and most influential wine competitions, the Decanter World Wine Awards attracted close to 17,000 entries from 58 countries in 2026. Wines were assessed through a rigorous blind-tasting process by an international panel of 245 leading wine experts, including Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers. Gold medals are awarded only to wines that demonstrate exceptional quality, making this achievement a significant milestone for Survivor Wines.
The Survivor Reserve Chenin Blanc 2023 forms part of the premium Reserve Range, showcasing exceptional wines crafted from carefully selected vineyards. The fruit is sourced from a six-hectare dryland bush vine vineyard in the Swartland, where the region's uniform decomposed granite soils, naturally lower pH and pronounced minerality produce a Chenin Blanc with remarkable concentration, freshness and ageing potential. Rather than harvesting the entire vineyard, winemaker Pierre Wahl carefully selects fruit according to each vintage. In drier years, he harvests from the lower sections of the vineyard, while in wetter seasons he selects grapes from the higher-lying parcels to achieve the finest expression of the site.
For Pierre, this vineyard is more than just a source of exceptional fruit. "Wine doesn't just take you places, it also brings you back to your roots," says Pierre. Crafting the Survivor Reserve Chenin Blanc is as much a personal journey as it is a winemaking one. The vineyard belongs to his second cousin, while his grandmother lived on the neighbouring farm, making every harvest a homecoming to his family's Swartland roots. It is a connection that infuses every bottle with authenticity and sense of place, perfectly embodying Survivor Wines' commitment to celebrating South Africa's extraordinary wine-growing regions.
"This wine is incredibly close to my heart, and the Reserve Range represents the very best barrels selected from each harvest," adds Wahl. "We strive to create wines that showcase both site and variety, and this Gold Medal is wonderful recognition of the dedication and passion invested in every bottle."
The wine displays inviting aromas of melon, Golden Delicious apple and delicate peach blossom, complemented by subtle oak nuances. The palate is rich and textured, while its vibrant natural acidity and mineral character create balance, elegance and impressive ageing potential. Its freshness also makes it an exceptionally versatile food wine and a true expression of Swartland terroir.
The award comes at a time when South African wines continue to gain momentum internationally, with Chenin Blanc firmly established as the country's flagship white variety. Recognition from the Decanter World Wine Awards further reinforces South Africa's reputation for producing world-class wines that compete with the very best globally.
Inspired by the resilience and adaptability of the indigenous Nguni cattle, Survivor Wines celebrates the diverse terroirs of South Africa through a collection of wines that honour both place and perseverance. The Gold Medal awarded to the Survivor Reserve Chenin Blanc 2023 is a fitting tribute to this philosophy and to the exceptional quality that defines the Survivor brand.
