The Swartland Wine and Olive Route celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. During this time, the region arose from anonymity to lead a South African wine revolution that continues to reverberate around the world.
For the occasion, a series of limited-edition six-bottle cases has been instituted, containing wines that shed light on the story of the Swartland and the reason for its success. Cases may be ordered via www.swartlandwineandolives.co.za.
“We are very excited to be able to offer wine-lovers the opportunity to explore not only wines of the Swartland, but our heritage,” says wine route manager Jolene Janse van Rensburg. “Every case contains diverse styles and from diverse producers, many of them not often even available locally or outside of consignment contracts.
“Here’s the opportunity – through a single purchase – to get an overview of the region, all in the comfort of your own home.”
The Swartland Wine & Olive Route was formally established in 1986 and was one of one of South Africa’s earliest organised wine routes. At the time, however, the region’s vineyards were still widely regarded as only being good enough for bulk and fortified wines. It had no reputation as a producer of quality olives either.
Forty years later, things are vastly different. Courageous winemakers who sought to understand the land and its soils – and farm them accordingly - were rewarded with next-level wines. Their success and enthusiasm ignited a new passion in others and soon a revolution was born, turning heads in even the country’s most traditional regions.
During this time, sweeping societal changes were underway too. Post-1994, South Africans gained unprecedented access to wines from around the world, and they recognised the splendid standards being achieved by Swartland producers. A loyal following was cemented and continues to this day.
The launch of Swartland in a Box commemorates this amazing journey, providing an opportunity not only to lovers of the Swartland but also opening the doors to anyone who has ever been curious about it.
Every quarter of the year, the Swartland Wine & Olive Route will release two cases, each with a fresh selection. These cases are available in limited numbers only and information about every release will be advertised in the wine route newsletter and on its social media channels.
