The European Commission said it is preparing support for Armenia after what it described as Russian economic pressure, including more than €50 million in financial aid and steps to make it easier for Armenian goods to enter European markets, according to comments by Commission president Ursula von der Leyen after a call with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
The announcement comes as Russia has tightened restrictions on several Armenian exports in recent weeks, affecting agricultural products and adding pressure on sectors that also include wine and brandy producers. The dispute has become another sign of the broader political strain between Moscow and Yerevan as Armenia deepens contacts with the European Union while remaining a member of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Von der Leyen said the EU package would include direct financial support of more than €50 million, simplified trade procedures for Armenian agri-food products and practical assistance for sectors hit by Russian measures. She pointed in particular to Armenia’s flower industry after Russia recently restricted flower imports from the country. She said a shipment of 10,000 flowers was due to arrive in Latvia the next day, with more expected to follow.
