The true soul of South African wine has never just been about what is inside the bottle – it is found in the resilience of our soils, our vineyards, and the unbreakable spirit of the people who tend to them. These past few weeks, that spirit is being tested yet again. Devastating storms and unprecedented flooding have swept through the Western Cape, leaving trails of destruction across beloved regions from the Olifants River and Breedekloof to the Southern Cape and the Robertson Wine Valley.
The scale of the damage is heartbreaking.
In Robertson, the Breede River burst its banks, submerging entire farms. For boutique and heritage producers like Springfield Estate, years of meticulous flood defenses were rendered futile as hectares of young vineyards, essential irrigation, and vital pump houses were completely washed away in a matter of hours. At Van Loveren Family Vineyards, floodwaters surged two meters high through the winery, damaging homes, infrastructure, and destroying over a million bottles of stock.
Closer to home, in Rawsonville, our colleagues are not able drive their usual route to their offices and warehouses – it is estimated the repair to the damaged bridge will take around 9 months to complete.
Across the province, other bridges are down, electricity networks are shattered, and farming communities are under immense humanitarian and financial pressure.
Yet, as the water recedes, the rebuilding begins. Our wine valleys have faced trials before, and every single time, these communities find the strength to stand together and rise. But they cannot do it alone.
As wine consumers and club members, we have a profound role to play in this recovery. The absolute best way to show solidarity and provide immediate, practical relief to these farming families and agricultural workers is simple: buy their wine. Every bottle you purchase right now directly channels vital funds back into these wine farms and estates, helping them restore infrastructure, protect livelihoods, and replant the vineyards that will shape future vintages.
Let’s open our cellars and our hearts. When you choose your next bottle, intentionally look for the producers of the Breedekloof, Robertson, and the wider Western Cape. Let’s raise a glass to local resilience, and pour with a purpose.
