In 2025, California's vineyard area shrank to 540,000 acres, equivalent to roughly 218,500 hectares (–6.9%). In 2024, the area was still 580,000 acres (approx. 234,700 hectares), and in 2023, it was as high as 610,000 acres (approx. 247,000 hectares). This was announced by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) in its annual California Grape Acreage Report. Of the 540,000 acres, 30,000 acres are classified as non-bearing, meaning that in 2025, grapes for wine production were grown on 510,000 acres (around 206,400 hectares) in California.
