Perdeberg
As part of our #wineforgood initiative, we're proud to announce that Perdeberg Wines is now officially a Carbon Hero.

A sustainability milestone rooted in responsibility

As Perdeberg Wines celebrates 85 years of heritage and progress, we are equally proud to celebrate a significant step toward our future: our successful registration as Carbon Heroes.

This achievement reflects our deep commitment to responsible farming, sustainable production, and environmental stewardship. Sustainability is not simply an initiative at Perdeberg; it is embedded in the way we operate every day, from our cellar to our vineyards and across the landscapes we help protect.

Our Carbon Heroes registration is recognition of the practical steps we continue to take to reduce our environmental impact and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Sustainability at the core of our operations

At Perdeberg, sustainability forms part of our daily decision-making and long-term strategy.

Energy wise

At our cellar, we place strong emphasis on energy efficiency and renewable power. Clean electricity is generated through our solar panel systems, allowing us to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and lower our carbon footprint. Alongside this, our energy consumption is continuously monitored to ensure that every aspect of our operations runs as efficiently as possible.

This commitment allows us to make informed decisions, identify areas for improvement, and ensure that sustainability remains measurable and actionable.

Fuel wise

Smart transport planning plays an important role in reducing emissions. Our fuel monitoring systems carefully record all fuel usage, while a dedicated planning application helps streamline travel routes and operational trips. By improving route efficiency and reducing unnecessary travel, we are able to lower fuel consumption and minimise environmental impact.

These practices not only support sustainability goals but also improve operational efficiency across the business.

Water wise

Responsible water management is essential in agriculture and wine production. Our cellar tracks every stage of water flow, from intake to usage and discharge, through dedicated monitoring systems. This gives us full visibility of our water use and helps ensure responsible management at every step.

In addition, staff are equipped with water-saving tools, and high-pressure cleaning methods are used to minimise water waste while maintaining high operational standards.

Protecting soil for the future

Healthy soil is the foundation of long-term agricultural sustainability. We work closely with our growers to promote responsible soil management practices, including regular soil assessments and methods aimed at reducing chemical impact.

All our producers are required to be registered members of Integrated Production of Wine (IPW), ensuring adherence to recognised environmental and sustainability standards throughout the production process. By protecting soil health today, we safeguard the future productivity and resilience of our vineyards.

Promoting biodiversity and protecting natural heritage

One of our proudest sustainability commitments is the protection of biodiversity. Our shareholders have pledged to preserve 1,000 hectares of natural fynbos veld, ensuring that these vital ecosystems remain protected and untouched.

Within this natural area lies the J.N. Briers-Louw Nature Reserve, officially proclaimed in 1972. The reserve is home to the endangered Geometric Tortoise, one of South Africa’s most threatened species. We are also proud to be organically certified and continue to implement natural vineyard management practices, including the use of natural predators to control mealybug populations in selected vineyards.

This approach supports ecological balance and reduces reliance on chemical interventions.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Sustainability is often built through everyday choices. At Perdeberg, we integrate the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle into our daily operations. From minimising unnecessary consumption to reusing appropriate materials and maintaining effective recycling systems, we strive to reduce waste and operate as responsibly as possible.

These practical actions form part of our broader sustainability culture and contribute meaningfully to our Carbon Heroes recognition.

Building a sustainable legacy

Our successful registration as Carbon Heroes is more than a milestone; it is a reflection of who we are and what we stand for. As we celebrate 85 years, we remain committed to building a legacy that honours both our people and our planet.

By investing in sustainable practices today, we ensure that Perdeberg remains resilient, responsible, and future-focused for many years to come.
