Photographers, both professional and amateur, can start planning their shots: Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West will launch the fourth edition of its popular annual photography contest on 1 April.

A provincial heritage site in Somerset West, Vergelegen offers immense potential for photographers. The estate’s dramatic mountain backdrop and tree-lined avenues provide endless opportunities for landscape photography, while the gardens and seasonal blooms offer rich detail for macro photography. The wine range and restaurants provide opportunities for compelling foodie shots.

“We invite visitors to capture the moments and details that, for them, define the magic of Vergelegen, sharing their interpretations of what makes this remarkable 326-year-old estate so special,” says marketing manager Caroline van Schalkwyk.

Competition entries are free and, this year, Vergelegen introduces two innovations:

  1. Autumn photography window: Instead of the usual summer period, photographs must be taken during April and May.
  2. All entries must be in black and white. This presents a creative challenge, as photographers must rely on light, shadow, texture, and composition rather than colour to make an image compelling. This constraint also encourages experimentation, highlights emotion and mood, and can transform ordinary scenes into striking, timeless images.

Photographic partners

Vergelegen will again partner with Orms Direct, which has outlets in Somerset West, Cape Town and Bellville. As part of this collaboration, two guided photo walks will take place at the estate with brand partner Fujifilm.

Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with Fujifilm cameras and lenses in an experience designed to inspire creativity and connection with fellow photographers, while viewing the estate in a new light.

The guided walk on 18 April is fully booked, but places are available with Fujifilm consultant Hein Hough on 9 May, 08h30-11h00, cost R50.

Contest categories

  1. Camera class: Photos taken on any camera, with or without lenses.
  2. Smartphone class: Photos taken on a cellphone or mobile device.
  3. Junior class: For entrants aged 16 and under, using any device.
  4. People’s choice: Voted for by guests at the finalists’ function.

Entries in the three judged categories will be evaluated by Orms Direct staff and Vergelegen, with prizes including photographic equipment, and Vergelegen restaurant vouchers, wine and experiences. Winners will be announced at an estate function mid-year.

Entry rules

  • Each photo must relate to Vergelegen and be taken at the estate.
  • Every image must include a caption explaining the motivation behind the subject choice. Judges will consider both image and caption.
  • Each participant may submit up to two photographs, which must be their own work.
  • Winners and the top 10 entries must agree to have their photographs displayed at the estate and featured on social media, in print communications, and across Vergelegen digital channels. Credit will always be given to the photographer. Any further commercial use will be agreed upon in writing.

“The previous contest attracted over 500 entries,” says van Schalkwyk. “We are excited to see how the essence of Vergelegen is captured this year in a different season and in black and white.

“We are extremely grateful to Orms Direct for their enthusiastic support, judging expertise and prizes, which elevate the contest.”
