Meet Nyaniso Sibali, an entrepreneur originally from a small village in the Eastern Cape who turned his passion into a business that makes the wine scene more inclusive. He shares his inspirational story this #wineforgood month.

Based in Stellenbosch, Nyaniso Sibali is a wine professional with a decade of experience in the wine and hospitality sector. Originally from Tanga, a small village in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, Nyaniso's journey to the Cape Winelands is one of resilience and discovery. After relocating to Kayanmandi, Stellenbosch, he found his true calling in wine, blending his Xhosa roots with a deep passion for the local wine scene.

Nyaniso's expertise is built on a solid foundation, including formal training at the Cape Wine Academy and specialised studies in project management and transportation and logistics management at the IQ Academy. This mix of skills helps him understand the wine business from every angle, from how it's made to how it gets onto the shelves. Working at Bartinney Wine Estate, he's gained hands-on experience in both the cellar and in guest service, which is where he really fell in love with South African wines and the unique stories behind each bottle.

Today, as the founder of SA Wine Lovers, Nyaniso is on a mission to make wine more accessible to everyone. His platform focuses on curated tastings and experiences that connect people with the real culture and faces of the Cape Winelands. He also handles wine distribution across South Africa and into Europe, helping local wine labels reach a wider audience.

Nyaniso continues to bridge the gap between the vineyard and the consumer, always staying true to his belief: "Wine is more than a drink – it is a story of land, culture, and people. My goal is to help more people feel welcome in that story."

1. What was the first bottle of wine that really changed your mind about the industry?

One of the first wines that really changed my perspective was a Stellenbosch Chardonnay that I tasted when I started working in the Cape Winelands. Until that moment wine was something I simply served to guests. But tasting that wine while learning about the vineyard, soil, and people behind it made me realise that wine carries a story. This experience opened my curiosity and made me want to understand wine more deeply.

Fun fact: Chardonnay is often called the "queen of white grapes" because it can grow successfully in many different climates and soils around the world. It can produce wines that are fresh and crisp (green apple, citrus), rich and buttery (vanilla, toast, butter from oak aging), or mineral and elegant.

2. Growing up in the Eastern Cape, wine wasn't a part of daily life. How did you first bridge that gap?

Growing up in the Eastern Cape, wine was not something we were exposed to regularly. When I moved to the Western Cape and started working in hospitality, I became curious about the culture of wine around me. I started learning from colleagues (I was lucky enough with people I was with as amateur) asking questions, and tasting as much as possible. Over time, education and experience helped me bridge that gap, and I realised wine can be a powerful way to connect people, culture, and storytelling.

3. How did working at Bartinney prepare you to start your own business?

My time at Bartinney Wine Estate gave me valuable insight into both wine hospitality and brand storytelling. The owners are very nice, kind people I can say lot about them. Working with international visitors taught me how to present wine in a way that feels welcoming and memorable. I also learned the importance of quality service, attention to detail, and building genuine relationships with guests. Those experiences helped shape my vision for starting my own wine-focused business. I also noticed that not so many people knows about the small wineries with good wines and the best views like Bartinney.

4. What is your business, SA Wine Lovers, all about?

SA Wine Lovers is a boutique enterprise dedicated to curating exceptional wine experiences through:

  • Bespoke wine tours (public and private tours)
  • Reliable wine and spirits delivery services across South Africa and internationally

For me, it is about making South African wine approachable and enjoyable for everyone. The idea is to create experiences where people can discover the diversity of the Cape Winelands while learning about the stories and people behind the wines. Through tastings, curated wine experiences, and storytelling, I want guests to feel connected to the culture and heritage of South African wine.

5. How do you make a technical wine tasting feel approachable for someone who has never done it before?

I always start by removing the pressure. Wine tasting should not feel intimidating. Instead of technical terms, I encourage guests to describe what they smell and taste in their own words. Wine is personal, and everyone experiences it differently. When people relax and enjoy the conversation around the wine, they begin to appreciate it much more.

6. What does 'true inclusivity' in the South African wine sector look like to you?

True inclusivity means creating real opportunities for people from different communities to participate in the wine industry. That includes education, mentorship, and representation in all parts of the industry – from hospitality and tourism to winemaking and ownership. South Africa's diversity should be reflected in the future of its wine industry.

7. What is the most rewarding part of taking visitors through the Cape Winelands?

The most rewarding moment is when visitors realise that wine is more than just what's in the glass. When they begin to understand the landscape, the history, and the people behind the wines, they develop a deeper appreciation. Being able to share the beauty and culture of the Cape Winelands with people from around the world is something I feel very proud of.

8. What advice do you have for young people interested in pursuing a career in wine?

Stay curious and never stop learning. Wine is a journey that takes time, experience, and passion. Taste as many wines as you can, ask questions, and learn from people who are already in the industry. There are many different paths in wine, so remain open to new opportunities and keep building your knowledge.
