The release of Estate 2022 marks a significant moment for Rust en Vrede. As our flagship blend, the Estate represents the clearest expression of our vineyards, philosophy and enduring focus on red wine. The 2022 vintage is the first Estate release under the stewardship of winemaker Danielle le Roux, a milestone marking both continuity and evolution.
Produced in proportion to vineyard plantings, the Estate 2022 comprises 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah and 7% Merlot. The blend reflects the estate’s long-standing commitment to structured, age-worthy wines rooted in Stellenbosch terroir.
The 2022 vintage followed a favourable winter and a warm, dry January that ensured even ripening and excellent concentration. Grapes were hand-harvested and vinified by parcel, with careful oak maturation enhancing structure and complexity while preserving clarity and balance.
In the glass, the Estate 2022 shows aromas of mulberry, blackberry and cassis, layered with subtle notes of dried herbs, mocha and graphite. The palate is focused and harmonious, with fresh, ripe fruit supported by balanced acidity and fine tannins. Hints of red cherry, tobacco and spice unfold through a persistent finish. The structure suggests confident ageing potential of 10 to 15 years.
For Danielle le Roux, this release represents stewardship rather than departure – an affirmation of Rust en Vrede’s identity and the continued evolution of its flagship wine. Estate 2022 stands as both a marker of transition and a reaffirmation of the estate’s enduring commitment to balance, structure and longevity.
The Estate 2022 is now available directly from the estate and through selected fine wine retailers. With its structure and ageing potential, it offers both immediate enjoyment and the promise of evolution in the cellar.
