Boplaas
Boplaas has cemented its reputation as a powerhouse in wine and spirit production with a sensational haul of accolades this year.

Boplaas Family Vineyards' collection of honours – including multiple Double Golds at the Veritas Awards and trophies at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards – is an undeniable declaration of world-class quality and consistency across the entire portfolio.

This recognition, which notably includes a fifth consecutive Fortified Wine of the Year title from influential critic Tim Atkin MW, reaffirms that Boplaas's commitment to excellence, builds not only on a family legacy but offers a promise of what is yet to come.

“Awards are great to receive, but they also contain an important message for consumers,” says Boplaas marketing manager Rozanne Nel. “Consistent accolades at the most authoritative level serve as a broad and independent stamp of approval. This unwavering recognition instils deep trust with consumers, assuring them that every bottle delivers proven excellence they can rely on.”

3 Double golds and six golds at Veritas

Boplaas won three double gold and six golds at the Veritas Awards this year, while also emerging as the most successful producer of fortified wines.  Double Gold was awarded to Ring of Rocks 2022, a red blend of Portuguese varieties; the Cape Tawny NV; and, the Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2009.

Gold was awarded to the Boplaas Touriga Nacional 2024, Boplaas Cape Tawny 20 YO Colheita 2005, and the Cape Vintage Reserve 2023, 2022 and 2021.

A cornerstone of these achievements is the investment the farm has made in focusing on its key varieties. Margaux Nel has been winemaker of Boplaas since 2009 and has completed her MSc at Stellenbosch University specializing in Touriga Nacional as red table wine.

Best brandy in South Africa

At the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirit Awards this year, Boplaas once again proved its world-class mastery in both wine and spirits when it secured, amongst others, the coveted Brandy and Grand Prix Spirit Trophy for the 20 YO Pot still Reserve Brandy.

Furthermore, Boplaas claimed:

  • Double Gold for the Boplaas 9 YO Single Malt Whisky and the Cape Vintage Reserve 2022 and 2021
  • Gold for Ring of Rocks 2022, a red blend of Portuguese varieties; the Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2022; Touriga Nacional 2024; Cape Tawny NV; and the Cape Vintage 2023

Best South African port – Tim Atkin

Master of Wine Tim Atkin named a Boplaas fortified as his favourite of the year – for the fifth consecutive time.

His pick for 2025 was the Boplaas Colheita 2005 Tawny.

Best Grain Whisky in South Africa

Boplaas has long been famous for its wines and brandy, but its whisky continues to be included in rolls of honour for the farm.

It won Best South African Grain Whisky and the title for Best South African Grain Whisky Producer at the World Whisky Awards in London this year.  In addition, Boplaas’s entry – Boplaas 10 YO Single Grain Whisky Rum Single Cask – was on the shortlist to be named World’s Best Grain Whisky.

Alvarinho and Touriga Nacional highly rated

Boplaas was one of the top performers at this year’s Winemag.co.za assessment of wines made from niche varieties.

The Minority Report scored the Boplaas Touriga Nacional 2023 94 points, making it the second highest for a red wine. The Boplaas Alvarinho Family Reserve 2024 received 93 points in the same report.

Best port in SA at National Wine Challenge

The Boplaas Cape Tawny Colheita 2005 was named Grand Cru National Champion Best in Class by the judges of the 2025 National Wine Challenge's category for Sweet Wine.

In addition, the red blend Boplaas Ring of Rocks 2022 and Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2023 both received Double Platinum and inclusion in the competition’s list of the year’s Top 100 Wines.

Best South African port at Terroir Awards

The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2008 was awarded the best port-style wine at the 20th SA Terroir Awards this year.

Significantly, this accolade once again confirms the outstanding age-ability of Boplaas ports.
