Simonsig Family Vineyards proudly unveils its first Cape Brandy, Simonac, a small-batch, potstill XXO brandy that reflects close to two decades of patience, precision, and passion. With only 380 bottles produced in the first release, Simonac is not only a collector’s gem but a deeply personal project for second-generation custodian Johan Malan. Arriving just in time for its public debut, Simonac has also been awarded an outstanding Double Gold medal at the 2025 Veritas Awards.
The journey of Simonac began in 2007 with the final harvest from a historic Colombar vineyard planted in 1972. "This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to transform the last fruit from a vineyard with great character into something enduring and expressive," says Johan Malan.
To preserve the grape’s natural acidity, the fruit was picked early and fermented at cool temperatures. The resulting wine, left on its gross lees for several months to build texture, was distilled twice in one of South Africa’s most advanced French copper stills generously made available through a close family friend and supporter of Simonsig’s founder, Frans Malan. The spirit was then laid to rest in a single French oak barrel and matured for 15 years, slowly evolving under the watchful eye of father time.
A tribute to tradition and innovation, Simonac reveals a silky texture and rich complexity, shaped by slow oxidation and profound integration of flavours. On the nose, expect delicate notes of sun-dried peaches, apricots, and hints of Cape Fynbos, while the palate offers layers of crème brûlée and a rounded, lingering finish. Over half of the original volume was lost to evaporation – the so-called Angel’s Share – concentrating its elegance and rarity.
This Cape Brandy is best enjoyed neat in a balloon glass at room temperature. A contemplative after-dinner drink, beautifully suited to roasted nuts or dark chocolate truffles.
Simonac is more than a brandy. It is a reflection of a family legacy, a celebration of South African terroir, and a bold statement of Simonsig’s enduring spirit of innovation.
