Spier
Spier wines won three Double Gold medals at the recent Veritas Awards.

Spier Wine Farm brought home 17 medals from one of South Africa’s most prestigious competitions, the 2025 Veritas Awards, including Double Gold Awards for the 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2023, Creative Block 3 2021 and Spier Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2024 – exclusive to Woolworths.

We’ve always believed that good wine starts with good people and good soil. That soil might lie high in the Tygerberg hills, or close enough to the Atlantic to feel the breeze. This freedom to explore and work with what nature gives earned us three Double Gold medals, four Gold medals and three Silver medals at the 2025 Veritas Awards.

The Veritas Awards are the country’s longest-running and most prestigious wine and brandy competition. Leading the charge this year were our 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2023, Creative Block 3 2021 and Spier Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2024 (Woolworths), each earning a coveted Double Gold. Alongside four Gold medals and three Silvers, these accolades feel as though the red carpet was rolled out just for us.

Reflecting on these stand-out results, Cellar Master Johan Jordaan shares:
“We’ve never been after one varietal or style. Our goal is to make wines that show where they come from – whether it’s right here in Stellenbosch or from further along the Cape coast. Seeing the judges respond to that is incredibly rewarding and a real pat on the back for everyone on the team.”

Our icons of craft

The Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2023 comes from certified Old Vines planted in 1983 – a vineyard that’s earned recognition every single vintage since we started making wine from it. Barrel-fermented and matured in French oak for 10-12 months, it brims with ripe peach, pear and melon aromas alongside citrus and white coriander spice. Our second chenin to win Double Gold goes to the Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2024, made exclusively for local retailer Woolworths. Sourced from 35-year-old vines rooted in Stellenbosch’s decomposed granite and weathered shale, with False Bay’s maritime influence keeping things cool, it’s a chenin with depth and precision.

Spier Creative Block 3 2021 is a Rhône-style blend that brings together Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Viognier from Groenekloof and Stellenbosch. Aged 16 months in French oak, it offers violets and black cherry laced with black pepper and fennel, leading to a silky mid-palate with velvety tannins. It deserves the Double Gold win: irresistible now, but one to cellar if you’re feeling patient.

Exclusive to Woolworths, the Spier Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2024 shows generous citrus, quince and honeydew notes with a fresh, fruit-packed palate. Vegan-friendly and dry-wood matured, it’s bright, balanced and lingers beautifully on the finish – a standout expression worthy of its award.

Not to be outdone, our Creative Block 5 2022 – the most awarded wine in the range – continues its winning streak. This Bordeaux-style blend brings together five varietals without compromising what makes each one distinct. In the glass, you can expect notes of dark chocolate, berries and cedar – it’s a wine that shows what’s possible when you treat blending as an art form.

Each recognition is a nod to the people and places behind the bottle – proof that when we listen to the land, it tends to answer back.
