To honour this milestone, Survivor Wines proudly introduces two exceptional Pinotage expressions: the Survivor Reserve Pinotage 2022 and the Survivor Terroir Pinotage 2023.
Both wines capture the essence of the rugged terroir of the Swartland and celebrate the craftsmanship that has earned Survivor a place among the leading custodians of this uniquely South African grape.
Survivor Wines: A South African original
Survivor Wines takes its name from a Nguni cow that leapt into a vineyard on her way to an auction. This spirited act of survival became the inspiration for a brand that is as bold and resilient as its namesake. Just as no two Nguni hides are alike, every Survivor wine reflects the diversity of South Africa’s terroirs and the distinctive stories of the land.
Pinotage lies at the heart of the portfolio. Thriving in the decomposed granite and Hutton soils of the Swartland, the varietal develops depth, intensity, and refined tannins that have become hallmarks of Survivor’s wines.
Introducing the Pope of Pinotage
At the helm of Survivor Wines is acclaimed winemaker Pierre Wahl, a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild and recipient of the 2016 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Award. Known in the industry as the “Pope of Pinotage”, Wahl brings decades of expertise and passion to every vintage.
“I love making wine from all these different areas. I believe the more different building blocks you have, the more complex wine you will be able to make,” says Wahl.
His philosophy of harmony between vineyard and cellar, combined with a minimalist approach to winemaking, allows the purity of the fruit to shine. Through restrained oak use, gentle extraction, and meticulous blending, Wahl crafts Pinotage wines that balance power with elegance.
Survivor Reserve Pinotage 2022
Appellation: Swartland | Varietal: 100% Pinotage | Alc: 14.7%
The 2022 Reserve Pinotage shows a strikingly intense dark red colour, with aromas of red berries, cinnamon spice, and ripe plums that flow onto a full-bodied palate. Subtle vanilla and coconut notes from French oak complement layers of black plum, cherries, and blueberries. Matured for 20 months in oak barrel, only the 15 best barrels were selected for bottling, resulting in a wine with power, finesse, and long ageing potential.
Pairs beautifully with braised springbok shank with mash and green beans, rosemary-sprinkled Karoo lamb chops, or fried tofu with spicy ginger and sesame sauce.
Survivor Terroir Pinotage 2023
Appellation: Swartland | Varietal: 100% Pinotage | Alc: 14.91%
The 2023 Terroir Pinotage 2023 displays a deep garnet hue and vibrant aromatics of raspberry, plum, and wild strawberry, underpinned by aniseed and cinnamon. On the palate, it reveals dark cherry, mulberry, and a whisper of vanilla spice, carried by supple tannins and a finely balanced acidity. Matured for 18 months in French oak, this wine lingers with red berry flavours, cocoa, and warm spice.
Goes gorgeously with seared duck breast with cranberry jus, venison, Indian curries, and sharp, well-aged Gouda cheese.
Survivor’s place in South Africa’s wine story
With its origins in the remarkable story of a single Nguni cow that leaped from a moving truck and landed in the vineyards, Survivor Wines was born. That leap to freedom became more than a curious incident; it symbolised resilience, independence, and the bold spirit that now defines the brand.
Nguni cattle hold a special place in South African history and culture. Brought into the country over 2,000 years ago through the migrations of Nguni-speaking people, these hardy cattle are celebrated for their striking hides, each one uniquely patterned and unlike any other. These majestic animals are synonymous with wealth, heritage, and identity in many communities, and stand as a living emblem of strength and individuality.
It is this symbolism that inspired the Survivor name. Just as every Nguni hide tells a different story, each Survivor wine reflects the unique terroir from which it comes. Today, under the guidance of Cellar Master Pierre Wahl, Survivor continues to honour this heritage by showcasing the diversity of South Africa’s wine regions, from the intensity of Swartland Pinotage to the complexity of Tradouw Cabernet Francand the finesse of Elgin Chardonnay.
As South Africa celebrates 100 years of Pinotage, Survivor Wines is proud to contribute to the legacy of this varietal with two releases that express both heritage and innovation.
