Spier's organic winemaker, Tania Kleintjes, answers some of the most-asked questions about organic wine.

There’s a lot of talk about organic wine – that it’s healthier, more sustainable or that it just doesn’t taste as good. For Spier Wine Farm, organic wine is not just a trend, but rather a long-term commitment to restoring soil health, biodiversity and balance. We began our organic journey back in 2011, and released our first certified vintage in 2016.

So, we put your most-asked organic questions to the person who knows best: our organic winemaker, Tania Kleintjes.

What is organic wine, really?

It’s wine made from grapes grown without synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides. It focuses on healthy soil, clean farming, and careful hands.

What’s the big difference to conventional wine?

The big difference is in the vineyard. Since no chemical fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides are allowed in organic grape farming. What previously could have been done chemically, now has to be done with physical labour or a work around.

Does it taste different?

Not in the way you’d expect. Every wine is shaped by its grape variety, vintage and terroir but there's no “organic taste”. It’s simply good wine, made with fewer interventions.

Is it better for you?

Organic wines are made with fewer chemicals and have to meet stricter production standards. So, you can feel more confident about what’s in your glass.

Organically grown and mindfully made, our Good Natured, First Stone, and Farmer Angus organic wines are a celebration of our connection to the land and our commitment to farming with care. Reflecting the integrity of the soil it comes from, each wine is "certified organic", meaning it is made without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
