Spier
This October, Pinotage turns 100. In honour of our heritage grape, Spier releases their Pinotage Centenary Case.

The homegrown variety has taken quite the journey from Professor Abraham Perold's experimental cross-pollination of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (or "Hermitage") grapes in 1925. Bold in flavour and made for good company, Pinotage is the ultimate partner to a braai, a Sunday roast, or making memories wherever good food and great wine are involved.

To celebrate, we at Spier Wine Farm have put together a Pinotage case – six bottles showcasing everything this grape can do. Experience the full spectrum of our homegrown red through three of our most awarded expressions: the accessible berry-forward charm of our Signature Pinotage, the coastal elegance of Seaward Pinotage, and the complex depth of our heritage 21 Gables Pinotage. From bright, juicy sippers to serious, age-worthy examples, this collection shares the story of a grape that's grown from curiosity to national treasure.

This case includes:

  • 2 x Spier Signature Pinotage: This smooth Pinotage leaves a lingering dark berry aftertaste and delicious perfumy scent of subtle allspice and black cherry.
  • 2 x Spier Seaward Pinotage: This wine serves up lashings of rich black cherries and mulberry elements, followed by a rich, complex mid-palate with that tell-tale allspice and vanilla aroma Pinotage delivers.
  • 2 x Spier 21 Gables Pinotage: Dense tannins and a velvetly finish make this Pinotage decadent at every sip. The nose exudes violet aromas of sweet blackberries with a palate of Black Forest cake-like flavours.

"My best experience with Pinotage is when it has had the time to age – crushed berries and a touch of black truffle. Who could resist?" - Johan Jordaan, cellarmaster at Spier
