We are deeply saddened to share that Wilhelm Coetzee, red winemaker at Durbanville Hills, died on Friday, 12 September 2025 due to liver failure during an operation.
Wilhelm originally studied analytical chemistry at the Cape Technikon and joined Denel upon graduation as analytical chemist. During this time, his passion for wine grew until he decided to get a formal qualification. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Stellenbosch University, specialising in viticulture and oenology.
In 2000, he was appointed cellarmaster and winemaker at Flagstone Wines, where he worked alongside Bruce Jack. Here he played an essential role in building Flagstone's reputation locally and abroad, with the winery earning acclaim at major competitions.
In 2008, he joined Durbanville Hills as red winemaker.
"A cornerstone of the Durbanville Hills family since 2008, Wilhelm's quiet brilliance, passion, and precision shaped not only our wines but the heart of our cellar," said Durbanville Hills.
"His award-winning vintages reflected his deep respect for the vineyard and his unwavering pursuit of excellence. He was more than a winemaker. He was a mentor, a friend, and a gentle soul whose legacy lives on in every bottle and every memory. Thank you, Wilhelm. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten."

Durbanville Hills also lost their former cellarmaster, Martin Moore, to death in 2023.
