Rooted in legacy: Celebrating Pinot Noir from our heritage block
As Pinot Noir lovers raise a glass in celebration this week, it is worth reflecting on one of the most compelling conversations in fine wine: the role of old vines in elevating quality.
The case for heritage vineyards is gaining traction – and for good reason. To be clear, vine age alone doesn't define greatness. Young vineyards on exceptional sites can produce outstanding Pinot Noir. As these vines mature, something remarkable happens-especially with cultivars like Pinot Noir, where subtlety and site expression are everything. Older vines tend to yield wines with greater depth, nuance and refined structure.
These wines often show elegance, ageability and a quiet confidence rather than overt power. Managing these vineyards demands expertise. Pruning plays a crucial role in vine balance, and some believe that the carbohydrate reserves in mature vines, combined with reduced yields, boost flavour concentration and resilience. In a world focused on sustainability and site expression, old vine Pinot Noir offers both. It's not just about age-it is about balance, character and the quiet magic that only time can bring.

Harmony in the glass: The art of wine and music pairing at Bouchard Finlayson
There is a unique magic in how wine and music can elevate the senses. Like a great vintage, a single melody can stir emotion, awaken memory and enrich the moment. More than a novelty, pairing wine and music is a multi-sensory experience.
Research shows that music can subtly shape how we perceive flavour – enhancing sweetness, texture or acidity. A smooth Pinot Noir becomes silkier with a slow tune; a zesty Sauvignon Blanc even brighter with an upbeat rhythm.
At Bouchard Finlayson, we are excited to introduce two curated tastings that explore this harmony:
- Le Blanc Pairing: A refreshing selection of Blanc de Mer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sans Barrique Chardonnay, paired with music that captures their coastal energy and elegance.
- Premium Pairing: A refined tasting of Kaaimansgat Chardonnay, Hannibal, and Galpin Peak Pinot Noir, set to music that draws out their complexity and sense of place.
Follow us on social for launch dates and behind-the-scenes details. This is where we will announce when the experience begins.
