For the first time in its history, SASA will be led by an all-female executive team, with Laurie Cooper as chairperson and Erica Taylor as vice chair.

The South African Sommeliers Association (SASA) has announced the election of a new board, marking a bold new chapter for the country’s leading sommelier organisation. For the first time in its history, SASA will be led by an all-female executive team, with acclaimed sommelier and educator Laurie Cooper elected as chairperson and long-time SASA contributor Erica Taylor voted in as vice chair.

This milestone represents more than just a change in leadership – it’s a signal of growth, transformation, and a renewed commitment to professionalising and diversifying the sommelier industry in South Africa.

"It is a huge honour to be voted in as the chair(wo)man of SASA," says Laurie Cooper. “An exciting new dynamic is taking shape with two women at the helm. I certainly have some big boots to fill following the incredible work Spencer has done for the organisation over the years. Thankfully, I have an extremely strong team behind me and I do believe we have a very exciting chapter ahead.”

Cooper brings with her deep experience and international credentials: WSET Diploma, Master of Wine student, SASA Level 2 Certified Sommelier, founder of the KwaZulu-Natal School of Wine, and sommelier and winemaker at Abingdon Wine Estate. She has judged for the Trophy Wine Show and the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) in London, in addition to being runner-up in the Best Sommelier of South Africa competition in 2023.

Vice chair  Erica Taylor has been with SASA for over six years, previously serving as general manager. A certified sommelier and wine judge, Taylor has played a critical role in expanding SASA’s reach through strategic events, national competitions, and partnerships.

“It’s an incredible honour to be voted in as vice chair,” says Taylor. “Having worked behind the scenes for so long, I’m looking forward to stepping into this new leadership role alongside Laurie. She’s a visionary and a collaborator, and together we plan to grow SASA’s impact even further – supporting sommeliers, creating job opportunities, and raising the profile of South African wine service on the global stage.”

The new board also includes:

  • Andrew Shelly – Treasurer
  • Lennox Nyengera – Member relations
  • Jean-Vincent Ridon – Board member

This transition also marks the departure of outgoing chairperson Spencer Fondaumière, who has served in SASA’s leadership for the past eight years and will stay on as an advisor for a six-month transition period.

“After eight incredible years in SASA’s leadership, I’m filled with pride and gratitude for all we’ve achieved,” says Fondaumiere. “It’s been a true privilege to help guide the organisation through so many meaningful moments. I am proud of what we managed to get done and my heart swells for all the lives and careers touched by our work. I’m genuinely excited for what’s ahead. The new leadership team is made up of passionate, talented individuals who care deeply about SASA, and I have every confidence they’ll lead it into an inspiring new chapter.”

With this new leadership and board in place, SASA is poised to elevate wine service, education, and mentorship across the country. The reinstatement of the vice chair position reflects a broader strategy to increase operational capacity, regional representation, and industry relevance – especially in a rapidly evolving hospitality landscape.
