In 2025, the Aquila Collection proudly welcomed a new member to its growing family of iconic South African destinations – the celebrated wine estate formerly known as Mellasat Vineyards. With this acquisition comes not only a bold step forward, but also a return to origin, as the estate reclaims its historic name: Dekkersvlei Wine Estate.
Honouring the past, embracing the future
First established in 1693, Dekkersvlei is one of the Paarl region’s oldest wine farms. Nestled beneath the majestic Klein Drakenstein mountains, with sweeping views across the valley and its granite domes, the estate has long been a place of heritage and innovation.
In 1996, the Richardson family reimagined the property as Mellasat Vineyards, and in doing so, made South African wine history – introducing the world’s first White Pinotage. This bold and unconventional take on the country’s signature varietal quickly became a symbol of the estate’s pioneering spirit.
Now, under the Aquila Collection, Dekkersvlei steps into a new era – one that builds on its legacy while looking to the future with fresh energy, purpose, and vision.
A new look on the horizon
In line with this next chapter, Dekkersvlei Wine Estate will undergo a series of thoughtful renovations, beginning at the end of May 2025. The project will see enhancements to the tasting facilities, cellar spaces, and guest areas – all designed to reflect the natural beauty and relaxed refinement of the surrounding Winelands. The aim is simple: to offer guests an experience that is as considered and crafted as the wines themselves.

Now part of the Aquila Collection, Dekkersvlei offers more than a traditional tasting room experience. Guests can now look forward to wine safari experiences – curated opportunities to enjoy both the sophistication of the Winelands and the untamed beauty of Big 5 territory.
