Vergelegen aptly named one of its most popular restaurants Stables in celebration of its equestrian connections. Situated in the heart of the historic estate and surrounded by the manicured gardens which lie within Vergelegen’s 3,000 hectares of land; this smart but relaxed bistro showcases pieces of art that allude to its equine association, notably a wooden horse sculpture and horse-inspired design.
Inviting guests to take a seat for long family-style lunches, Stables is the best spot to sample Vergelegen’s globally exported portfolio of wines hand-picked, produced and sold on-site. Following our escapades across the estate that spans over three centuries, one sunny afternoon we enjoyed lunch seated beneath the sun-dappled terrace.
With the vista of the Hottentots Holland mountains beyond and located in the estate’s historic building from the 18th century, Stables at Vergelegen invites its 165,000 annual visitors into a classic bistro-style restaurant that champions a modern but uncomplicated line up of dishes. Throughout the few weeks spent in the country which has recently been voted the food capital of the world, we were spoilt with several exceptional meals; and a few days before flying home, The Stables restaurant exceeded our expectations with a standout culinary experience.
The dishes fuse local flavours and cooking techniques with signature favourites. Browse the familiar such as salt and pepper calamari served with lemon and garlic mayonnaise or a deep-fried camembert...
