A heritage vineyard, a legacy of excellence
Planted in 1988, the Chardonnay vineyard at Waterford Estate is one of South Africa’s oldest Chardonnay blocks, making it the third-oldest certified Chardonnay vineyard in the country. In 2023, this vineyard was officially recognised as a Heritage Vineyard by the Old Vine Project, marking its 35-year milestone and reinforcing its significance in the evolution of South African Chardonnay.
A vintage of elegance and purity
The 2021 vintage showcases Waterford Estate’s commitment to producing Chardonnay of distinction, with a focus on purity, elegance, and minerality. The vineyard, found on the coolest site on the estate, thrives in granite and red clay soils, lending the wine its signature mineral complexity and refined structure.
The deep-rooted vines draw character from the soil, resulting in a Chardonnay that is fruit-forward, complex and mineral, with a beautifully textured mouthfeel. Aged for 11 months in 300l French oak barrels, with only 8% new oak, the delicate oak flavours serve to give structure to the wine's perfect balance.
Tasting Notes: A reflection of terroir
On the nose, the 2021 Single Vineyard Chardonnay presents delicate yellow fruit, citrus blossom, and hints of brioche complemented by a subtle toasty character. The palate is defined by a vibrant minerality, with flavours of nectarine and a gentle oak influence adding depth and intrigue. As the wine evolves, its nutty and brioche undertones will further enhance its complexity, promising graceful ageing for years to come.
A wine of distinction
“The 2021 Single Vineyard Chardonnay is a true testament to the vineyard and the team outside who tend to it so carefully in its older age,” says Mark le Roux, cellarmaster at Waterford Estate. “It is a real privilege to work with one of South Africa’s oldest Chardonnay blocks, and this wine reflects our philosophy of crafting fine wines that are site-expressive and timeless.”
