As the Cape settles into its cooler months, there’s a quiet transformation on the slopes of Bottelary Hills. The vineyards at Hartenberg Estate retreat into their winter rest, the cellar breathes deeply, and the estate takes on a new rhythm – slower, richer, more intimate. It’s a time of crackling fires, soulful food, and wines that warm more than just the glass.
At Hartenberg, we believe every season brings its own gifts. Winter, in particular, invites us to do what we do best: welcome guests with generosity, cook from the heart, and pour wines that reflect our deep connection to the land.
A new winter experience: Paired lunches in the underground cellar
This year, we’re opening the doors to something truly special.
For a limited time, our Underground Cellar – usually reserved for the quiet ageing of our finest wines – will transform into a warmly lit space for intimate paired lunches. On Saturdays and Sundays throughout winter, 20 guests will gather for a meal and escape into the soul of the farm.
These paired lunches are served over two generous courses, each matched with a curated selection of wines, including limited releases and cellar favourites. The menu is seasonal and heartfelt, the setting quiet and intimate, and the experience unlike anything else we’ve offered before.
This isn’t a restaurant service. It’s slower. More personal. A glass poured generously. Food made with the same intention as our wines. And time – to taste, to connect, to truly settle in.
The estate in winter
Beyond the paired lunches, the rest of the estate invites you to settle in and stay awhile as well.
In the tasting room, a fire crackles in the hearth and the pace slows to match the season. Here, wine tasting isn’t just about aromas and flavour notes – it’s a journey through the story of Hartenberg itself: our legacy, our soils, our cellar, and the regenerative philosophy that runs through it all. Whether you're tasting our Estate range or our Super Premium releases, each wine is an invitation to connect more deeply with the land that made it.
If you're feeling hungry, the Hartenberg Farm-style Eatery serves a small but satisfying seasonal menu that reflects the same values as our wine: ingredient-led, local, and full of flavour. Expect hearty winter soups, homemade bread, and our ever-popular Dexter beef burger, made using regeneratively farmed beef raised right here on the farm. For something lighter, the Grazing Platter is ideal for sharing alongside a tasting.
There’s space for children to roam, quiet corners to unwind, and all around you, nature rests. Whether you’re here for a long lunch, a quick tasting, or just the comfort of a glass by the fire, you’ll find a warm welcome waiting, even on the greyest of days.
