It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Johnson of Zevenwacht Wine Estate, who died peacefully on 13 April 2025 at the age of 85.
Harold was a remarkable man – a visionary entrepreneur, devoted family patriarch, and a true son of Stellenbosch. He was the founder and managing director of Johnson Crane Hire, which he built from humble beginnings in 1976 into one of South Africa’s most respected lifting solutions companies. He led the company with vision, clarity of purpose, and integrity until he sold it in 1996. After two decades of building a successful business, Harold fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning a wine farm in his hometown of Stellenbosch – the place he grew up and where his heart had always remained.
In 1987, ahead of his sale of Johnson Crane Hire, the Johnson family purchased Zevenrivieren in the Banhoek Valley and Zevenwacht Wine Estate on the Polkadraai Hills in 1992. With Harold’s passion for the land and his enterprising spirit, Zevenwacht was transformed into a thriving wine and hospitality destination, all a testament to his vision and dedication. Every corner of Zevenwacht bears his fingerprint.
Harold was not one to slow down. He remained actively involved in the vineyards and operations of the farm, always leading by example, always early to arrive and the last to call it a day. His work ethic was legendary, matched only by his generosity of spirit, strength, and deep love for his family and the land he so cherished.
He leaves behind a legacy of excellence, determination, and vision, carried forward by his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

"My utmost sincere condolences to the Johnson family, my thoughts are with you in this time of sadness, my prayer is for God to soften the wound, as time goes by, and may you find comfort in the many memories that stays behind, a man that we could all admire.
I will never forget, each time I enter the gate at Zevenwacht at around 5:50 am, it was just the robot that decided which one of us will drive around the dam first. I always thought, 'Why is Mr Johnson here, before all his workers?' and I conclude that this is a lesson to learn. It's what separates work from passion. Much love." - Jimmy Arries
"I am so sorry. He was a legend with humour, heart, and character. Such a loss." - Suzaan Laing
