Rijk's Wine Estate
Rijk's Wine Estate in the Tulbagh Valley reports on their 2025 wine grape harvest.

The Rijk's Wine Estate 2025 vintage was shaped by a cold, wet winter – just what the vines needed after the previous season. This extended dormancy allowed them to rest and recover fully, setting the foundation for a strong growing season.

In preparation for spring, we planted korog and lupins in every alternate row, providing a rich source of organic material that will be worked back into the soil. The lupins, in particular, play a crucial role in replenishing nitrogen levels, naturally enriching the vineyard’s ecosystem.

Budburst was even across the vineyard, followed by steady, healthy growth throughout the season.

However, nature always throws a few challenges our way. This year, a sudden heat spike on Christmas and Boxing Day reminded us of the unpredictable side of farming.

Fortunately, the Tulbagh Valley’s unique geography, cradled by the Witzenberg mountains, brings dramatic temperature drops at night – often more than half of the day’s peak. This natural cooling effect is a lifeline for the vines, helping them recover from the heat of the day.

The vines had to work exceptionally hard to ripen their bunches, but we believe that struggle often leads to greatness in the bottle.

"Some people say vines stress, but I don't think vines stress – people do!"

The vine instinctively knows what to do, and we trust in its resilience.

This vintage is particularly special for us. Not only are we celebrating our 25th harvest, but we also join the South African wine industry in marking Pinotage’s 100th anniversary.

These milestones make this year’s wines even more meaningful, and we can’t wait to share them with you.
