Bellingham's history of firsts
The winery's story began in 1943 under Bernard and Fredagh Podlashuk, the pioneering couple who transformed Bellingham into a beacon of South African winemaking innovation. Their passion for excellence led them on a post-World War II research journey to the South of France, where they studied contemporary winemaking techniques. Undeterred by the challenges they faced, their relentless hard work and extraordinary courage culminated in the founding of Bellingham.
Their innovative and determined approach led to multiple firsts in the South African wine landscape:
- The first rosé served on the Blue Train
- The first single-varietal Shiraz in 1951
- South Africa's first dry white blend in 1949
