Raka Wines
Last year we decided that it was time for a change and we revealed our new labels for our premium range. Now is the time for a label change for our flagship range. We would like to introduce the new labels for the Raka Quinary and Raka Biography Shiraz. Look out for the bottles dressed in our new label. We feel that the new look reflects the elegance of our wines in an up-to-date manner.
The black background symbolises our squid fishing roots. When fishing the tjokka (calamari) its squirts out black ink when caught. Piet Dreyer, always in a hurry, decided to paint his custom built freezer squid vessel black. This meant less time to scrub the boat to remove stains, and hiding good catches from fellow fishermen. He called the vessel Raka after the main character in the epic Afrikaans poem Raka. Years later when we started our family winery we named it after Piet’s beloved black fishing vessel. We are still in the calamari fishing industry, so the black background represents the “born of the sea” part in our slogan: Born of the sea, Guided by the stars, Blessed by the earth.
