A trip down memory lane: Share in the heritage of Pinotage

Prince meets a humble peasant

Did you know that South Africa’s iconic Pinotage grape was born from a chance crossing of two classic varietals? In 1925, Dr Abraham Izak Perold, a pioneering viticulturist, created Pinotage by blending Pinot Noir with Cinsault. This bold experiment almost faded into obscurity when Perold’s vines were abandoned. Thankfully, Dr Charlie Niehaus recognised their value and salvaged them, ensuring Pinotage’s legacy as a cornerstone of South African winemaking.

Overcoming adversity

Pinotage’s journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. In the 1970s, the varietal struggled with a controversial aroma, which led to its diminished popularity. The tide turned in 1987 when Beyers Truter’s Pinotage won the prestigious Diners Club Wine of the Year award. This accolade helped rekindle interest and showcase Pinotage’s unique potential, transforming its reputation and setting the stage for a comeback. History was made at the 1991 International Wine & Spirits Competition when a Pinotage received the trophy as the Best Red Wine, and Beyers Truter was awarded International Winemaker of the Year.

A resurgance of interest

Imagine a grape once overshadowed by international favourites like Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, only to make a remarkable comeback. After export channels opened, South Africa’s wine industry began to thrive globally, but Pinotage was initially overlooked. By the late 1990s, renewed efforts to refine the grape and its clones led to a revival. Today, Pinotage is celebrated for its vibrant, fruity flavours and is a testament to the resilience and creativity of South African winemakers.
