New vintage releases: The Dry Land Collection and Endura Icon Range

With the arrival of winter, our vines have gone into dormancy – a crucial phase of the growing season before the next harvest. We'd like to present six new vintage releases from our Dry Land Collection and Endura ranges.

Delivering exceptional quality, the 2021 vintage stands out for its cooler growing season and later harvest. This extended hang time, praised by critic Jancis Robinson, resulted in wines with concentrated flavors and aging potential, making 2021 a vintage to celebrate, particularly for red wine enthusiasts.

Whilst Perdeberg is synonymous with Chenin Blanc, the winery’s produced award-winning Pinotage since 1986. Today, Perdeberg creates a selection of Pinotage wines of which the Dry Land Collection Resolve Pinotage and Endura Winemaker’s Selection Cape Blend holds great recognition in its exceptional quality and acclaim.

Resolve Pinotage 2021: Emphasizing the dryland bush vines on the packaging, the grapes were harvested from two sites in the Paarl area. Receiving no irrigation, and primarily relying on winter rainfall, these vineyard blocks go deep underground to obtain the necessary nourishment required to create small thick-berried bunches. Pinotage flourishes under dryland conditions. The soils, a combination of decomposed granite and Malmesbury shales, contributes towards a dark fruited and well-structured wine. 100% Pinotage matured in 300- and 500-litre French oak barrels for 18 months. With only 30% new oak barrels used, lends itself to an elegant, fruitful Pinotage with great chrisma and a luscious tannin structure. Maturation took place in the bottle for another 12 months. A deep crimson red, explicit aromatics of distinctive spiciness and undertones of fresh cherries, dark berries and plums, with a juicy structure that will evolve in taste and texture over the coming years.

Winemaker’s Selection Cape Blend 2021: A tribute to the enduring journey of survival of a dryland vine, these vines enjoy the Mediterranean climate of the coastal region. A blend of Pinotage (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (24%), Malbec (13%) and Shiraz (13%), this wine showcases the absolute best fruit combination selected by our team of winemakers and cellar master to create a limited-release blend that is of significance. The addition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec adds complexity and balance to the wine. Aged in 500-litre French oak barrels for 18 months with only the best barrels selected to create this wine of distinction. The 2021 vintage is a dark red with a bouquet of dark berries, blackcurrant, red fruit, hints of cocoa and dried tobacco leaf flavours. This wine achieved 95 points at the International Wine & Spirits Competition last month. Pre-order this significant wine with our Tasting Room and stock up on the 2020 vintage that was recognized as one of the winners of the Perold ABSA Cape Blend Competition.

Courageous Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2023: A celebration of boldness held by the dryland bush vines. 2023 being one of the most interesting vintages of all time! Despite a dry spring, an early start to the cool growing season and ideal harvest weather, it’s produced a truly exceptional vintage and our recent accolades confirms it. A special old vine planted in 1985 in Paarl creates a wine of exceptional quality and taste. Matured for 10 months in 500-litre French oak barrels of which 80% of older barrels are 2 - 6 years old, and the remaining 20% are new French oak barrels. Further maturation of six months took place in the bottle before releasing. A pale gold colour, with notes of citrus, pear, peach and pineapple on the nose. The palate boasts with hints of citrus, litchi and vanilla, while the finish is crisp with a well-defined acidity. Recently achieved gold medal status at the Drinks Business: Chenin Blanc Masters.

Endura Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2022: Born from the cellar master's love for Chenin Blanc and desire to create something truly unique, unlike any other. Though blessed by a wet winter and cool growing season, 2022's vintage became one of the longest and latest due to scorching January and February heat. Situated at a high altitude on the back of Paardeberg Mountain, this single vineyard block enjoys overlooking views of the Swartland area. The soil is mostly decomposed granite and this gives natural acidity and freshness to the wine with excellent ageing potential. Naturally fermented in a Diamanté Wine Tanks and French oak barrels. The wine was aged on the lees for 8 months before blending the different components. Green-yellow in colour with notes of ripe stone fruit, citrus and lemon on the nose. The palate is rich with a fresh acidity and mineral finish. Recently received 96 points at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC).

Rossouw’s Heritage 2022: named after Jan Rossouw, one of the founders of Perdeberg, this Rhône White Blend of 62% Chenin Blanc & 14% Grenache Blanc, 14% Viognier, and 10% Verdelho is the perfect food wine. Made in a lightly wooded style, 30% of this wine has spent 10 months in 500-litre French oak barrels and, once bottled, was aged a further 6 months. The blend changes each year, depending on which dryland grapes are the best quality of that particular vintage. This exquisite wine reflects the power of diversity shouldering up together to create something beautiful! Light gold in colour with aromas of citrus, passion fruit, litchi and white pear evident on the nose. The palate is rich with vanilla and ends with a crisp acidity. Achieved Double Platinum and Top 100 status at the 2024 National Wine Challenge.

Fortitude Fortified Chenin Blanc 2022: Created from low-yielding dryland bush vines in the Paarl area, this recent addition to our Dry Land Collection has impressed since inception and continues to do so with its second vintage receiving a gold medal at the Drinks Business: Chenin Blanc Masters. Made in a jerepigo style, the fortified wine was matured in 500-litre French oak second-fill barrels for 12 months. Deep gold in colour with dried apricots, ripe yellow fruit and hints of peach on the nose. A fresh, full palate with litchi, candied citrus and undertones of honeycomb. The ideal wine to enjoy during winter time or as a dessert wine when hosting guests.
