We often refer to role models in the workplace, but we do not always realize that they share certain qualities and skills that can have a considerable impact on colleagues and the workplace. But how do we identify and define a role model?

Integrity is assumed to be an important trait for a role model, but it is also worth noting that despite being exceptionally capable, role models are humble and treat others with respect.

Some of the qualities role models have in common are that they have confidence in their abilities, but also believe in the abilities of their co-workers. They work hard and often do more than is expected of them. It is also a characteristic of role models to volunteer to assist colleagues with their tasks.

Strong mentoring relationships play an important role in the development of role models, but a realistic approach must be maintained in the development of future leaders and role models. This process cannot be achieved overnight, and the individual must identify opportunities available to them.

Gerrie Grootboom started as a temporary worker during the 1998 harvest at Roodezandt RF in Robertson and was permanently appointed in 1999, but his potential as a leader was soon noticed.

According to Gerrie, there were few opportunities in the industry at the time and his path to greater success was a long, difficult road. He attended several training courses to increase his knowledge and Roodezandt RF's cellar management confirmsthat the training Gerrie attended played a definite role in his development as a leader.

For instance, in 2005 Gerrie completed the Wine Training SA's SKOP 3 qualification, and in 2021 the Wine Training SA's SKOP 4 qualification. Gerrie also attended the Winetech study groups from 2007 to increase his practical knowledge and in 2014 he was named the SA Cellar Assistant of the Year. According to Gerrie, regular attendance of the Winetech study groups and senior workshops for cellar assistants not only increased his knowledge but also encouraged him to reflect on the topics and the contents of the sessions.

Roodezandt RF cellar management, as well as Jean Du Plessis, and Christie Steytler, continuously motivated, supported, and guided him and he was gradually exposed to all aspects of the cellar environment. Gerrie is currently in charge of the grape juice cellar, including relevant and administrative responsibilities.

According to the Roodezandt RF cellar management, Gerrie can function under pressure and always maintains a positive attitude, even when challenges are experienced in the cellar. He can delegate and will not hesitate to take responsibility for mistakes he has made. It is generally accepted that when a role model takes responsibility for making mistakes, it often inspires co-workers to do the same. His communication and relationships with colleagues and cellar management are excellent and as a result, his co-workers respect him. It is also worth noting that Gerrie’s co-workers take note of what he says and take his advice and comments to heart.

Gerrie believes it is important to be aware of his team’s abilities; and that good communication is an important aspect of leadership, as a leader is the link between co-workers and management. Gerrie believes that leadership should not be enforced and that it is essential for leaders to assist andsupport their teams. He confirms that it is especially important during the harvest to support one’s team and that a leader should communicate with respect.

According to Gerrie, leaders need to realize that co-workers observe what they are doing, including their approach and consequently trust is affirmed. It is also important for leaders to be receptive to questions asked and to answer these questions satisfactorily. He believes that when a cellar invests in the development of its employees it is to the benefit of the employees, as well as the cellar.

Gerrie is convinced that one reaps the rewards for hard work, but that one must be consistent in one's actions and in everything one does. Perseverance and an optimistic approach certainly played a major role in Gerrie Grootboom’s quest for greater success.
