This accolade celebrates Tokara's unwavering dedication to crafting exceptional wines that embody the unique terroir of Stellenbosch.
Now in its 21st year, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) has firmly established itself as the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. Respected globally for its rigorous judging process and world-class judges, DWWA results are trusted internationally by both trade and consumers. Winning Best in Show at such a prestigious competition underscores the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of Tokara wines.
The DWWA judges praised the Tokara Reserve Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 for its exceptional balance and complexity. The wine impressed with its deep, rich colour and a bouquet that goes beyond the typical Cabernet Sauvignon profile. The judges noted its superb drinkability and potential for aging, highlighting its seamless integration of flavours and elegant structure. This recognition from such esteemed experts affirms the excellence of Tokara's winemaking.
"In South Africa, Stellenbosch is synonymous with Cabernet," says Karl Lambour, Tokara's general manager. "Tokara occupies enviable terroir in this iconic town, and this wine best exemplifies not only our commitment to the variety but also our best effort to express that precise match to our site."
The story of Tokara is deeply intertwined with the Ferreira family, who became custodians of the estate in 1994. Their passion for excellence and investment in the complex world of fine wine has transformed Tokara into a beacon of quality and innovation in Stellenbosch. This dedication is evident in every bottle produced.
Tokara is strategically placed on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, the most significant piece of topography in Stellenbosch. Here, on 400-million-year-old granitic soils, various clone/rootstock combinations of Cabernet Sauvignon thrive in a moderate, Mediterranean-type climate. This exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon is chosen for its intensity and balance, delicately accentuated with a touch of Petit Verdot from the same site.
"Our journey to crafting the finest expression of Cabernet Sauvignon began in earnest with our first bottling in 2013. This milestone was no accident; it was the culmination of nearly a decade of meticulous experimentation with different vineyard sites, coopers, and winemaking techniques. Each step, each trial, was driven by our relentless pursuit of perfection. Today, with years of refined expertise, we confidently present our interpretation of this remarkable variety, showcasing our unwavering commitment to quality and innovation in every bottle.
"This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Tokara team, from the vineyards to the cellar, and we are honoured to share this exceptional wine with connoisseurs around the world," says Lambour.
