Simonsig shares news about The Grapesmith wine collection, the Satin Royale Society, the harvest, and upcoming wine events.

A taste adventure with The Grapesmith collection

The Grapesmith narrates the tale of an individual who meticulously crafts something novel – a wine – from grapes. The range offers exclusive, small-batch blends that highlight Mediterranean and Rhône varieties, expressed in South African terroir. These wines encapsulate the innovative and experimental spirit of our winemaking legacy. The Grapesmith employs a philosophy centered around minimal intervention, experimentation, and a steadfast dedication to gastronomic excellence.

Second-generation winemaker Johan Malan introduced the Grapesmith range to the Simonsig portfolio in 2016 and includes the following:

  • Die Kluisenaar 2020 showcases the art of balance with a blend of Marsanne and Rousanne
  • Mediterraneo 2020 highlights the art of blending with a composition of Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Verdelho and Bourboulenc

Stay tuned for a new addition to The Grapesmith collection coming April 2024!

A harvest update from our cellarmaster

We've had an eventful week in the cellar. Harvest is complete for all our Cap Classique, white wines and Pinotage. Overall, despite lower yields, the quality remains exceptional.

Last week marked the beginning of our red grape harvest, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the first bits of Syrah and Grenache. We're seeing tiny berries packed with flavour and concentration.

Our Cap Classique and Chenin Blancs are showing fantastic promise. In March, we'll begin the intricate blending process for our Kaapse Vonkels. On Thursday, the Skrikkeljaar (Leap Day), we'll be bottling our Jamala Gewürztraminer, marking one of our earliest bottlings of a wine.

Harvest will be wrapping up soon and we look forward to what the wines of 2024 will bring.
